What is an ALT?
An ALT, or Assistant Language Teacher, teaches English lessons at public elementary and junior high schools in Japan. Working together with Japanese English teachers, an ALT strives to be an English role model. An ALT should actively engage students and other teachers in English communication, inside and outside of the classroom, to encourage the use of English, create an interest in other cultures, and to show how fun English can be. To better respond to the needs of each school, an understanding of Japanese culture is also a huge asset.
